Centennial-Lawrence Trailhead

Background
The proposed trail head is located at the southeast corner of Centennial Parkway and Lawrence Street, and will serve walkers, bikers, hikers, skaters, roller bladers, etc. The trail head is part of the Upper Las Vegas Wash Trail, and is part of the Southern Nevada Regional System of Trails and Open Spaces, which connects to the Wetlands Park in Clark County and generally circles the Las Vegas Valley.
The primary purpose of a trail head is to provide parking for trail users and easy access to the trail. Comfort stations (restrooms) are provided where land and utility connections permit.
Since the City was able to acquire this 2.5 acre parcel and fund the project with federal funds, there is an opportunity to enhance the trail head with park-like features that can further improve and serve the community.
The public comment period will be open through Nov. 30. Parks and Recreation staff will then evaluate the comments, make all appropriate changes to the trail head plan, and post the final plan to the Parks and Recreation Web page. Trail head construction is expected to begin in late 2011.
Description
The proposed 2.5-acre trail head would feature several amenities, including parking, restrooms, a playground, shade structures, picnic tables, barbecue grills, benches and turf, trees and landscaping.
The trail head is envisioned to have a nature theme. The playground could have climbing boulders, bridges, net climbers, areas for imaginative play, physical exercise and fun. The intent is to provide unique experiences not typically found in school playgrounds.
Hilly grass areas will promote informal, unstructured play.
The shade structures may take their cue from the adjacent trail shelters and have an ocotillo design.
